Jeffrey McCready and Zeeshan Hassan Andoh first met in kindergarten at Saint Ann's School in Brooklyn. By middle school, the two had developed  shared interest in mathematical and calligraphic art, spending their free time constructing geometric forms, drawing mandalas, inventing typographies, and experimenting with systems of visual symmetry.

In high school, they studied live figure drawing together over two years and took a course together on the history of modern East Asia, where they presented a project tracing the development of Japanese manga and anime from the visual traditions of ukiyo-e printmaking and Japanese painting. The project marked an early shared interest in how visual languages evolve across time, media, and cultural systems.

They later studied side by side in Providence before both entering the contemporary art world at David Zwirner—Zeeshan as a gallery assistant, and Jeffrey first as a docent and later as an art handler. It was within this environment, surrounded by contemporary artistic production, exhibition design, and global visual culture, that Zeeshan first approached Jeffrey with the foundational ideas that would eventually become Vaimānika Shāstra.
